2020 has been challenging for all of us, however, your support has been a tremendous source of comfort. Thank you.

We also wanted to share the exciting news that we have elected our incoming President, Mr. Kunsang Datok. He has been an integral part of our Executive team since 2015 and has served the Tibetan community for several years in various roles.

Our current Vice President, Ms. Youdon Tsamotshang, will continue in this role.

Mr. Datok and Ms. Tsamotshang will be shouldering the enormous task of ensuring our organization persists in being innovative and adapting to our new normal. With your encouragement, we are sure that they will thrive in their roles.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our outgoing President, Mr. Tashi Dhondup la who has served excellently as our organization’s President for the last two years (2019-2020).

His tireless dedication in these unprecedented times and his ability to lead us in increasing our virtual presence has allowed us to continue to fulfill our vision. We look forward to him continuing his leadership as an Executive Member.

At this time, we would also like to once again express our heartfelt gratitude to all of you for supporting our work, thus far. We are motivated to fulfill our mandate to ensure all young Tibetans have access to higher education, despite financial barriers.

TCP’s 20 Year Anniversary Celebration
On October 12, 2019, TCP supporters and well-wishers gathered at the Tibetan Canadian Cultural Centre (TCCC) to celebrate our 20th anniversary. By 9am, TCCC was bustling with volunteers and by 10am, participants for our friendly tsokpa/kyiduk talent competition started coming in.
Eight Tsokpas and Kyiduks participated in our Talent Show – SFT, Ex-TCV, Domey Kyiduk, Nangchen Nyernga Kyiduk, TCCC students, Pema Koepa Kyiduk, Nyanang Kyiduk and Toepa Cultural Society of Ontario. We are so thankful to have our community members from Toronto showcase their talents and join us for a wonderful day event.

We continued our celebration in the evening with a concert with over 500 attendees. Lobsang Delek la from France, Tenzin Dolma la from New York and amazing local artists such as Lhumo Tso and Tenzin Dhondup lit up the hall with their stage presence and incredible voices.

We also had a lottery draw and three lucky winners took home some Apple products! The night ended with the audience hitting the dance floor for some Gorshey.

Thank you to all that attended our event and a special thank you to all the volunteers, event sponsors, members and donors.

His Holiness encouraged TCPC and its members to continue carrying out their vision

In the month of May 2016, TCPC’s executive member, Mr. Thupten Monlam Tsamotshang went from Canada to India to build bridges between TCPC and various Tibetan NGOs and CTA. The first stop was the tropical town of Bylakuppe in the Mysore District of the southern state of Karnataka. This town holds the biggest Tibetan settlements in exile with an estimated 70,000 Tibetans living in 4 square miles. Thupten la met the camp leaders from the old and new settlements to discuss TCPCs work, whereu   pon they heartily agreed to contact TCPC should any students from their settlements need financial assistance.

Next stop for Thupten la was the city of Dharamsala in the mountainous northern state of Himachal Pradesh. Dharamsala, the city which is the 14th Dalai Lama’s home away from home also acts as the capital city of the Tibetan population in exile. Here, the representatives from Tibetan government in exile, also known as Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) assemble and make decisions for the community.

On 20th May 2016, Thupten la also had an auspicious opportunity to meet with His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama. He was able to brief as well as provide a written document to His Holiness about the history and vision of TCPC and the current work it’s doing. His Holiness, pleased with TCPCs work, encouraged TCPC and its members to continue carrying out their vision. His Holiness also gifted TCPC with a statue of the Buddha to place in the office.

Thupten la also met with the Education Minister as well as representatives from CTA’s Department of Education to discuss the Sherig Scholarship provided by the CTA.  They further discussed on how best to work together and amalgamate CTA and TCPC’s respective efforts to provide better opportunities for Tibetan students in exile. Further, a new student Lobsang Wangmo, was urgently picked as a TCPC scholarship recipient due to her dire circumstances and inability to attend school due to financial setbacks.

After a six-hour-drive from Dharamsala, Thupten la reached Dehradun which is located in the foothills of the Himalayas in the state of Uttarakhand. Dehradun is home to Ngoenga School for Tibetan Children with Special Needs. Thupten la visited this school which was established on March 8th, 2000 and today educates and provides care for 50 students who have ranges of disabilities from Autism, Down Syndrom to Cerebral Palsy. TCPC also donates Rs 50,000 yearly to support the important work they do.

The final stop for Thupten la in India was Tibetan Homes School Mussoorie. Thupten la visited this educational institute to get a sense of the daily day-to-day lives of students as well as meet some scholarship recipients attending Tibetan Homes School. Further, THS Mussoorie staff members emphasized the need for organizations like TCPC. THS Mussoorie, due to lack of funds, has recently raised their scholarship recipients minimum marks to be 75% from 70%. The staff members voiced their concerns on the vacuum that would leave, in terms of financial support for students that do not meet the now increased minimum marks but have the desire and ability to attend post-secondary education.

TCPC Updates

Thupten la also met with two TCPC executive members based in India – Gen. Tenzin Thinlay la and Tenzin Phakdon la to touch base on TCPC’s future plans as well as to discuss the selection process of TCPC scholarship recipients.

During Thupten la’s extensive trip to India, he, as a representative of TCPC was able to meet with His Holiness, various representatives of the CTA, teachers, and students. Further, he was able to visit various Tibetan settlements and schools. This trip has provided TCPC with a more holistic lens to understanding the current situation of Tibetan children’s education in exile and an integrated approach to being an upholder of education and opportunities for Tibetan students.

Note: The trip was financed personally by Thupten la. All funds raised by TCPC is used solely to provide financial assistance to underprivileged Tibetan children’s education in India, Nepal and Tibet.
